Teaching numeracy in Chemistry to improve outcomes in the classroom.

12 December 2018 14:00-16:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction

Overview

With the increase in mathematic content in the Chemistry curriculum, this event is an action research project that explores the evidence of the impact of numeracy on outcomes in Chemistry and strategies to improve numeracy in the secondary classroom.

As well as providing resources to tackle numeracy in the classroom we will be looking to study and measure the impact of the intervention in the Chemistry classroom.  Teachers will be provided with assessment material to measure baseline numeracy and outcomes after intervention.  The assessment data will then be analysed to determine the impact and value of intervention for teachers to share and roll-out within their schools.

Programme

14.00     Registration and refreshments

14.15     Seminar: Teaching mathematics for chemistry students: high school and higher education
.
Dr Sarantos Marinakis, University of East London
Dr Tippu Sheriff, Queen Mary University of London

Numeracy is often cited a limiting factor in achievement in Chemistry.  This seminar explores the evidence that supports these findings and discusses how teaching the mathematics of Chemistry in secondary education can impact and support achievement in higher education.

14.45     Workshop: Teaching numeracy in Chemistry to improve outcomes in the Classroom.
Dr Yeasmin Mortuza, Pedagogics
This session explores some techniques and resources to embed numeracy in the Chemistry classroom focussing on:
  • balancing equations
  • mole calculations
  • energetics
to improve numeracy and achievement through better access to the curriculum.

16.00     Close of meeting

You are politely reminded that whilst these events are free to attend, there is a cost to the UUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ of Chemistry and the organising partner, to set up these events.  If you register and are unable to attend, please give three working days’ notice so that the place can be offered to another teacher.
