Visit to the National Library of Wales

5 September 2015, Aberystwyth, United Kingdom

Introduction
Saturday 5th September 2015, at 2.30 p.m.

Meet in the Reception Area of the National Library of Wales, just beyond the revolving door at the entrance.

We will be viewing the current exhibition of some of the library's early printed scientific books. One of our members, Hywel Lloyd MUUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, is co-curator of the exhibition and has kindly offered to guide us and introduce the exhibition 'The Secret Workings of Nature: Robert Hooke and Early Science'. The exhibition marks the 350th anniversary of the publication of Robert Hooke’s 'Micrographia', the library’s copy of which is on show, with its magnificent drawings. Also included in the exhibition are instruments of the type that Hooke used for microscopy and astronomy, and books and manuscripts by such pioneers in the beginnings of modern science as Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton, while early science in Wales is represented by works by Edward Lhuyd and Thomas Pennant. All were fellows of the UUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥.

Other exhibitions current at the National Library are ‘Philip Jones Griffiths’ and ‘Gwladfa’. The former is a major exhibition reflecting the life and work of the Rhuddlan-born photographer who, as an eminent photojournalist, brought the horrors of the Vietnam War to the attention of the world, while ‘Gwladfa’ marks the 150th anniversary of the sailing of the Mimosa from Liverpool to establish the Welsh settlement in Patagonia.

We hope that as many members as possible will be able to join us on this occasion.
