Terry began his chemical career at the National Chemical Laboratory (then part of the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington): He moved to the Laboratory of the Government Chemist (LGC), then in Waterloo, and within a short time was working on the analytical determination of nitrosamines in a range of substrates, mainly food. A subject which is still a hot topic as we are currently warned about eating too much processed meat. He became a world expert on this subject using gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometric or chemiluminescent detection. In 1978, he became head of the LGC's Regulated Drugs Group and under his leadership, many new techniques and methods for analysing drugs prior to presentation of evidence in courts of law were developed. During this period he was awarded a DSc by Brunel University. There followed a short time in the headquarters of the Department of Trade and industry where he assisted the Chief Scientist, then Mr Oscar Roith. He returned to LGC as head of the Customs Division (Senior Principal Scientific Officer) before joining King's College London as professor in the forensic sciences. He was the author or co-author of well over 100 peer-reviewed papers and major reviews in a range of international journals and editor of The Analysis of Drugs of Abuse (John Wiley 1991). His personal life was dominated by his Christian care for those less fortunate than himself and, together with his wife Cynthia, founded the charity Project Return (projectreturn.org.uk). He was also the author of numerous books about the era of steam railways.
