Dr Alan Lloyd Lakin BSc MSc CChem FUUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥

Dr Alan Lakin past away after a long struggle with his health on 1 July 2019. He was 86 years old and first arrived at the University of Reading with his ration book in the 1950s as an undergraduate to study Animal Nutrition in the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry. Shortly after graduating he joined the staff of the University of Reading - in the Department of Food Science, specialising in food chemistry. He was an inspiring teacher and retained contacts with former students until he died. He played a big part in the design of the laboratories and varied amenities of the University's Food Studies Building, which opened in 1981. He married Dr Ann Walker, nutritionist, in 1984 and together they ran a successful consultancy for the health food industry for 10 years following Alan's retirement. He received considerable help in his latter years for his health from natural medicine and encouraged Ann to a late-life professional career in herbal medicine.
