1979 - 13th of April 2017
Dr Russell Binions (38) died on the 13th of April. Russell graduated with a Ph.D. in chemistry from UCL in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Parkin and Prof Carmalt. He continued as a PDRA at UCL for three years before obtaining a UUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ Dorothy Hodgkin fellowship at UCL. Russell obtained a lectureship in materials engineering at QMUL in 2010 and was recently promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2016. He is sadly missed by family and friends.
Russell had a passion for chemistry, especially materials chemistry. He published more than 100 papers in international journals. Particular achievements include detailed work on thermochromic films, the development of new metal oxide gas sensors for trace analysis and the use of chemical vapour deposition in making functional films. His work was innovative and wide ranging with particular emphasis on doing science that could benefit others.
Away from science Russell was passionate about all sports, particularly American sports. He and his wife Olga were regular supporters of the Streatham ice hockey club. He also played lead and base guitar for a series of bands and at one point had a collection of 11 guitars.
He is sadly missed by family and friends.
