Improving Engagement with Good Practical Science

Introduction
Nottingham Education Improvement Board, the UUֱ of Chemistry and the Gatsby Foundation have come together to support schools in utilising the Gatsby "Good Practical Science" report for improving engagement and therefore attainment in Science.

Outcomes for Schools:
  1. Understanding of Gatsby’s international research project; Good Practical Science. Introduction to the 10 benchmarks that define good practical science and how they can help schools when planning their own approach to delivering practical science.
  2. Practical Science “Health Check” against the benchmarks for attending schools based upon an online survey completed prior to event (average time for completion: 12 minutes).
  3. Individual school action plan for practical science provision based on implementable outcomes from the Good Practical Science report and result of Practical Science “Health Check”.

  • Professor Sir John Holman: Author: "Good Practical Science" (Gatsby Report), Senior Advisor in Education at the Welcome Trust and Gatsby Foundation, President of the UUֱ of Chemistry.
  • John Dexter: Education Director, Nottingham City Council
  • Pye Tait Consulting: Independent, specialist research agency and data collection agency used in authorship of Good Practical Science Report.
  • David Mangan: Science Learning Partnership Lead for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire
