The Schools Analyst Competition is a national competition run by the UUÂãÁÄÖ±²¥â€™s Analytical Division for first year Sixth Form or equivalent. The competition has two stages: regional heats and a national final, where up to 16 regional heat winners compete for the Challenge Shield and significant cash prizes for themselves and their schools.
A regional heat for this competition will be held at the School of Chemistry, The University of Manchester, on Tuesday 27 March 2018. The competition is an opportunity for students to use analytical equipment not usually available in schools, gain additional practical experience and apply their knowledge of chemistry to solve problems.
Most of the tasks will be linked to the A-level curriculum, using equipment and concepts familiar to the students such as titrations. Some tasks will use techniques and equipment not available in most schools, such as spectroscopy. It is designed to be both fun and educational. Instructions will be given and students will be supervised but help from staff will be limited to ensure fair competition. Each team will consist of 3 students from the same school or college.
Prizes (in the form of gift vouchers) will be awarded to individual students and schools whose teams are placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in this regional heat.
Some CPD for accompanying teachers will be offered while the students tackle the analysis task.
