Colloids are awesome little objects

7 July 2015, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
When we zoom in to microscopic dimensions a colloidal world reveals itself, the one where small objects, also known as colloids, rule. Small particles, droplets, organisms, and nano-patterns have a tremendous influence on the properties and function of the vast ranges of materials we come across and use in our daily lives, and has done for millennia. The ability to fabricate complex colloidal particles and structures, and to understand their behaviour and interactions with for example liquids, each other, and solid surfaces, allows us to make formulations and materials with advanced properties.

In this lecture we will investigate what makes colloids a small force to be reckoned with. What makes them interesting? What “cool” materials can we make with them? Examples will include coatings, adhesives, gels, and small particles that can “swim” or change size and shape, like small organisms such as bacteria.
